NACA April 2009 Quarterly Meeting
County Commissioner - Carolyn Mason Guest Speaker

NACA CALENDAR OF EVENTS

Meetings This Past Year

Tuesday, October 27, 2009

County Commissioner Nora Patterson Guest Speaker
Other Elected Officials In Attendance:  County Commissioners Joe Barbetta and Jon Thaxton; Sherriff Tom Knight; Property Appraiser Bill Furst

Agenda:

1.  Honore' Extension - timelines, details; particularly near us in Nokomis.

Note - this is a significant event for mid-county, obtaining another north/south artery.  The southbound lanes of I-75 will become this road.  Commissioner Patterson will share the very latest details.

2.  The TBARTA (Tampa Bay Area Regional Transit Authority) plans for our county.  Commissioner Patterson is our representative on this regional planning authority; there's some pretty ambitious things in the works!

3.  Completion of the Route 41 road job --- specifically, our request for landscaping to make it PRETTY and IMPRESSIVE - some 'wow factor' for Laurel/Nokomis!   Note - the Venice paving job of this summer (after our job) is already landscaped; very attractive.  NACA is working with our county leadership in pressing to get our Laurel/Nokomis segment landscaping completed to our satisfaction (plant material/type; trees vs. bushes/grasses issue - NACA strongly prefers many trees for long term beauty, shade, ambiance, the visual breaking up the wide road expanse).  Come learn details, and provide input please.

Update -  FDOT has recently rejected our landscape plan stating that, effective July 1, 2009, they're changing the rules.  Note, our plans have existed for 7 years, and the trees would be half grown if FDOT didn't take twice as long to build the road as planned.  Please come prepared to learn about this and what we must, as a community do, to defend ourselves.

4.  This past July NACA requested an audit of the FDOT Route 41 road construction project due to the extended duration and myriad is problems encountered.  The goal of the audit request was to identify the causes, and hopefully, prevent similar experiences in other upcoming FDOT projects in our area.  Commissioner Patterson may speak to the audit as she is a member of the Sarasota-Manatee Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) http://www.mympo.org/

5.  Commissioner Patterson will speak to some significant county issues (positives/opportunities and challenges  -  there is so much going on in Sarasota County right now), and open the floor to questions.  Please feel free to ask questions about matters of interest and importance to you.

6:30 p.m. Coffee/Sweets    -   7:00 P.M. Meeting
Nokomis Community Center
Nippino, Trail - Nokomis

NACA is pleased to host Sarasota County Parks & Recreation General Manager John McCarthy in a special Nokomis community workshop to review several parcels nominated in our area for purchase under the Neighborhood Parkland Acquisition Program.  The meeting format will offer residents a voice in prioritizing the various sites for public purchase.  Please join us for informal chat.

Neighborhood Parkland Acquisition Program is a voter-approved and taxpayer-funded program designed to acquire parklands. In March 1999, voters approved an Environmentally Sensitive Lands Protection Program to protect native habitats by a 0.25 mil ad valor tax collected through 2019. In November 2005, voters approved a second referendum extending the program through 2029 and expanded the county’s land protection efforts to include neighborhood parkland acquisitions.
